Dr. Erik Van de Kelft

Prof. dr. Erik Van de Kelft graduated magna cum laude as a Doctor in Medicine, Surgery and Obstetrics from the Universiteit Antwerpen (University of Antwerp) in 1985. He won the Specia prize as the laureate of his class. He fulfilled his compulsory military duty in Büren, Germany as a Commander in the Medical Service.

He started his training in general surgery with Dr. A. Hubens in the AZ Stuivenberg (General Hospital Stuivenberg) in Antwerp. After two years there he chose a neurosurgery specialisation under the supervision of Dr. J.J. Martin and Dr. P. Selosse in the Universitair Ziekenhuis Antwerpen (University Hospital Antwerp). He completed his second last year in the Neurosurgery Department B under the supervision of Dr. F. Frèrebeau in Montpellier, France. During that same year, he also received training in paediatric neurosurgery in the Hôpital La Timone (La Timone Hospital) in Marseille under the supervision of Dr. M. Choux. He became a recognized neurosurgeon in 1993.

He started his career as a permanent staff member of the Neurosurgery Department at the UZA and also as a consultant at the AZ Maria Middelares (Maria Middelares General Hospital) in Sint-Niklaas. During this period, he earned a Doctorate in Biomedical Sciences and wrote his doctoral thesis on the molecular genetics of malignant brain tumours.

Throughout the years, Prof. dr. Van de Kelft has become chiefly known for his expertise in back surgery and in the surgical treatment of facial pain.
